After ten days after the official publication, Federal Law No. 5 “On Amendments to the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation and Article 31 of the Criminal Procedure Code of the Russian Federation” dated 03.02.2014 will come into force.

The changes introduced by this Federal Law toughen the sanctions applied to persons who have committed crimes against the foundations of the constitutional order and state security. In particular, the changes were affected by the sanction of Article 280 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation. From the moment the aforementioned Federal Law enters into force, sanctions for public appeals to carry out extremist activities will provide for a punishment of one hundred to three hundred thousand rubles or in the amount of wages or other income convicted for a period of one to two years. The changes also affected the maximum sanction limit of this article towards an increase in the punishment term in the form of imprisonment by one year.

Federal law changes the sanction for persons who have committed crimes provided for in Article 282 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation. The maximum limit of punishment in the form of forced labor for inciting hatred or enmity, as well as humiliation of human dignity, is doubled.

Among other things, responsibility for other crimes of an extremist nature is being tightened.
